It was nearly two years ago that I wrote about a nineteenth century red earthenware double handled bowl with lots of slip decoration that had been purchased decades prior from a family living in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. And that bowl happened to also be similar to artifacts recovered by Chris Rowell and Bruce Adwell from an early to mid nineteenth century context in Richmond Virginia.
Nevertheless, this piece sold yesterday in a group lot at Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates in Mount Crawford, Virginia, which also closely resembles some of the artifacts recovered in Richmond. The thought is that some of this type of slipware was produced in Richmond, and possibly by a potter (or potters) who had some sort of previous background or influence from Pennsylvania or maybe even Maryland.
Note: The lot sold reasonably yesterday for $425 plus the auction premiums, although the other three pieces had previously sold through Sotheby's in Manhattan.
