The two gallon nineteenth century red earthenware jar that is shown to the right in these photos sold yesterday in a group lot at Carlsen Gallery, Inc. in Freehold, New York. And while the slip decoration along with the shape of this jar may appear like some stoneware manufactured in New York State and elsewhere in the Northeast - this is actually an object produced in Berlin, Wisconsin, circa 1855-1865.
Interestingly, some of the styles of the decoration applied in Wisconsin, such as this example are thought to be influenced by at least one migrant New York stoneware potter, which likely explains why there are similarities found in some of the decoration between the two areas. In fact, I have seen wares made in Whitewater, Wisconsin mistaken for red earthenware made in New York, Ontario and Illinois, although some of the styles made in Wisconsin are often unmistakable once the wares from this area are understood.
For example, between 1845 and 1882, the city was home to five potteries operated by both German immigrants and settlers from New England and New York. The Whitewater potteries supplied settlers in the region with a wide variety of utilitarian forms. And by about 1867, the Whitewater potteries transitioned from the production of glazed utilitarian wares to flowerpots and vases. Much of this production is underappreciated today outside of the Midwest region, even though it should be recognized on a national level by collectors and major art museums.
This lot sold for $1,300 plus the auction premiums. The cobalt decorated stoneware jar is unmarked, but most likely made in New York in the 1800s.
