A New York State Stoneware Dog or Fox Inspired from an English Form in Crocker Farm's Current Sale

As many people know, Crocker Farm's summer 2021 auction in Sparks, Maryland closed last night at 9:00 pm, and among my favorite pieces in the sale was a nineteenth century stoneware dog or fox formed pitcher made in upstate in New York. I teased this on my Instagram story recently, and the reason I find this object so fascinating is because it must be inspired after an earlier English form. 

This past winter I found a related piece in an antique shop in the Boston area, where the comparison is unmistakable. A friend told me that this English brown glazed stoneware dog or fox was probably made in Nottingham, England in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century.

Note: The New York dog sold for $3,000 plus auction premiums.
