I have always been curious to know the whereabouts of the red earthenware jar illustrated in Figure 43 in Lura Woodside Watkins' (1897-1983) book Early New England Potters and Their Wares, seeing that it is a jar from Bristol County, Massachusetts. Although, the jar is attributed in the book to the Nathaniel Seymour (1763-1849) Pottery in West Hartford, Connecticut.
However, I was quite surprised this morning while receiving the last group of photos sent to me from Historic New England that will be included in my forthcoming book from Historic Beverly, titled, A Celebrated Industry: The Historic Wares of Southeastern Massachusetts, Bristol County and Cape Cod; I learned that they actually own the jar pictured in Watkins' book. It is a part of the Nina Fletcher Little (1900-1993) Collection at Cogswell's Grant in Essex, Massachusetts. And in my opinion, one of the finest examples of Bristol County and New England pottery known to exist today.
It appears that the attribution is a result of an old tag that is adhered to the base of the jar that reads "Seymour Pottery Hartford Conn." I also want to note that this jar is somewhat unknown today, and to my knowledge, it has never been published in color before. This is just an absolutely amazing piece of Bristol County pottery.
