An Excellent 19th Century Southern Maine Red Earthenware Jug

This is an excellent small nineteenth century southern Maine red earthenware jug that I acquired two weekends ago; the spotted green glaze is really something else! My best guess is that it was made by the Bickford family in either Buxton or Limington about 1840, although, another pottery is also possible, seeing that there were so many small businesses located in this part of the state, especially in the first half of the 1800s.

Interestingly, this is now the third piece of excellent New England red earthenware that I have acquired through a friend from a longstanding private collection in New Hampshire. The other two pieces were both manufactured in Bristol County, Massachusetts, one of which was featured a few years ago at the New York Antique Ceramics Fair in Manhattan, and both of which will be included in my forthcoming book A Celebrated Industry: The Historic Wares of Southeastern Massachusetts, Bristol County and Cape Cod.
