Outstanding Western New York Stoneware Jug Sells at Dirk Soulis Auctions in Missouri

This is an excellent nineteenth century stoneware jug that sold last month at Dirk Soulis Auctions in Lone Jack, Missouri. The jug is decorated with an American eagle in freehand cobalt with a thirteen star federal shield and the initials "E.A.M.," as well as the date "1831." It is also impressed with the mark "E.A. MONTELL, OLEAN, NY."

This is the stamp of Edwin A. Montell who manufactured pottery in Olean, Cattarugus County in western New York, although I have been unable to determine how 1831 relates to Montell's production, seeing that I have only found him as a documented potter during the circa 1869-1874 period. But it is thought to be a presentation piece. Nevertheless, this is a highly significant example of New York State stoneware.

The jug sold for $24,000 plus the auction premiums. The sale also featured a second jug made by Montell with a more simple design selling for $170 plus the auction premiums.
