A 19th Century Red Earthenware Jar Discovered in an Old Basement in Iona, New York

For those of you who read my most recent story published in the April 2022 issue of Maine Antique Digest, titled, Heber C. Kimball: A Mormon Potter from Western New York - this nineteenth century red earthenware jar may be another example of Kimball's production in Mendon, New York, circa 1822-1833. And even though this type of glaze is attributed to potters all over America and Canada, archaeological evidence published in the article reveals that this was also a style likely produced by Kimball.

Nevertheless, this jar was discovered some time ago in an old home's basement in Ionia, New York, which is located about five miles south of Mendon. The rediscovery and identity of Kimball's red earthenware production in Western New York (and possibly Ohio) is a subject that will hopefully expand with new evidence over time, but this jar is certainly a conversation piece about the style of wares that Kimball possibly made before he became a Mormon leader in Salt Lake City, Utah. Although, this jar could also be mistaken for nineteenth century production in places like Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, throughout New England, among other areas.
