Potters on the Merrimac: A Century of New England Ceramics

With the month of August more than half way over, I thought it would be a good time to provide an update on the pottery exhibit that I am guest curating at the Custom House Maritime Museum in Newburyport, Massachusetts. The title of the exhibit is Potters on the Merrimac: A Century of New England Ceramics, covering earthenware and stoneware production in the Newburyport area from the eighteenth through the early-twentieth century.

The names associated with this production include Bayley, Bodge, Chase, Pecker and Nickerson - and the exhibiting wares will include archaeology, a wide variety of local production from various museums and private collections, as well as objects made by these potters recovered at archaeology sites elsewhere in New England.

The exhibit officially opens to the public on Saturday September 7th, and there will be a couple of national feature stories published before then previewing the exhibit and the history of this production in some of the antique trade publications. However, I also want to give a sneak peak today showing the cover of the exhibit catalog, which will be available for purchase once the exhibit opens. The catalog includes a history of pottery production in Merrimacport (formerly South Amesbury), Massachusetts and Newburyport, along with a lot of the archaeology and wares that will be displayed in the exhibit.
