A Red Earthenware Animal Feeder that was Just Discovered in an Old Barn in West Gloucester, Massachusetts

It has been over one-month since I wrote about a nineteenth or early-twentieth century red earthenware animal feeder that I saw with my niece, Alexis on display in early-October at the Topsfield Fair in Massachusetts. I found it incredible that the feeder was still used by a local farmer today. I have also written about this type of form over the past few years; whereas, I believe this is a type of production that took place in either Beverly, Massachusetts or Peabody, Massachusetts based on having discovered nearly ten examples in various twentieth century contexts of ownership in the past five-to-seven years. I believe these type of objects were manufactured by at least one of these Essex County, Massachusetts potter's businesses: the Osborn Pottery, the Joseph Reed Pottery, the Moses Paige Pottery or the Charles A. Lawrence Pottery.

Nonetheless, earlier this morning, I found another example in the cold weather while I walked around Todd's Farm Flea Market in Rowley, Massachusetts; the dealer told me that he had just cleaned out an old barn in West Gloucester, Massachusetts, and he found the feeder inside the barn.

The form, interior glaze and overall style of this red earthenware feeder is in keeping with the others that I have discovered in Massachusetts, in such Cape Ann communities as Annisquam, Beverly, Essex, Gloucester and Salem.
