Williston, Vermont auctioneer, Duane Merrill assembled an exciting auction, which he sold earlier today that included a few examples of wonderful red earthenware and stoneware.
The most exciting object was a five-gallon stoneware crock made by Haxton, Ottman & Company in Fort Edwards, New York. The cobalt decoration was described as a wedding cake house. The crock was given a modest $1,000-$2,000 pre-auction estimate; however, it ended up selling for $18,000 plus the buyer's premium.
The most interesting example of red earthenware was a huge eighteen-inch cooler, which was likely made in Vermont; although, I can not confirm the potter's business. The cooler sold for $400, which was likely a result of the amount of damage it had sustained in the area where a spigot would have been inserted. I have never seen a red earthenware cooler of this size before, but I would not be surprised if the potter, who made it was inspired by some of the important coolers that were made in Bennington, Vermont in the nineteenth-century.
Note: The prices shown below do not reflect the buyer's premium; the price only reflects what the object sold for at the auctioneer's podium.
