A Rare 19th Century Unglazed Mug from the John Corliss Pottery in DaysFerry, Woolwich, Maine

This is an intriguing discovery that was recently made in Maine; it is an unglazed nineteenth-century red earthenware mug that was produced at the John Corliss Pottery in Days Ferry, Woolwich, Maine, circa 1825-1880. I have never seen an unglazed mug like this before, which makes me question why this object was never glazed.

I have included a picture of a glazed John Corliss Pottery mug, which is also the only glazed mug from the Corliss Pottery that I am aware of today. These mugs are basically a perfect match to each other.

The big question: Why was this mug never glazed? Could it have served another purpose outside of a drinking mug? Or did this object somehow slip through the cracks, where it was accidentally never glazed. Nevertheless, this object is quite interesting!
