A Remarkable Example of 19th Century Maine-Made Red Earthenware

This is an incredible nineteenth-century Maine-made red earthenware pitcher, which some people may recognize, as a result of a similar object that has recently appeared with a dealer at some of the county's premier antique shows. I do not believe this is the same object, but it is very similar.

This is what I perceive as one of the most incredible glazes that were produced in Maine in the 1800's - and, this object is also proof 'why' Maine-made red earthenware is so desired today. This pitcher is also decorated with a coggled wheel just below the rim, which is also a characteristic rarely found on everyday northern New England pottery.

Note: This object may have been an everyday form; however, it would be truly interesting to hear how the original homeowner used (and viewed) this product in the nineteenth-century.
