New Discovery: A Southern Maine Red Earthenware Pot Acquired in Southern New Hampshire

Over the weekend, I was fortunate to acquire this nineteenth-century red earthenware handled pot from a friend, who lives in southern central New Hampshire. This object's form suggests a southern Maine attribution (to me), and it may have even been made at the Bickford family pottery in Buxton, Maine, circa 1820/30-1860.

There are a few reasons "why" I suggest the Bickford Pottery as a possible attribution, such as the overall form, the manufacture of the handle and the style of the footed base. Nevertheless, this is also a rare Maine-made object to find today.

Note: I believe similar forms were made elsewhere in southern Maine, too, which includes the eighteenth and nineteenth-century red earthenware potter's industry in North Yarmouth, Maine.
