Below, I have tried to give an accurate attribution for each piece of red earthenware in the sale - the attribution could be as specific as a certain potter, potter's business, town, city or county, but it could also be as generic as a province, state or region.
There was also some terrific nineteenth-century stoneware in the sale that included objects from Alabama, Massachusetts, New York City, upstate New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Vermont. My favorite stoneware objects were probably the crocks that were reportedly made by Dave Drake (sold for $750) and Thomas Chandler (sold for $1600) in the Edgefield district of South Carolina before 1850. However, there were also examples of yellow ware, Rockingham ware, Whieldon ware, Delft ware, etc. - and, some of those examples were tied to Diana and Garrison Stradling, who are prominent ceramic collectors, dealers and experts in New York.
As expected, the Ohio-made pottery did very-well - the Ohio-made products included art ware, Rockingham ware, yellow ware and stoneware.
A surprise to me was lot number 621, which included a salt-glazed stoneware jug made in the late-eighteenth or early-nineteenth-century marked 'BOSTON' that sold for $1,300 plus the buyer's premium.
It is also my understanding that the majority of the red earthenware and stoneware came from a single owner collection. I actually recognize a few of the pieces from recent prominent antique shows here in New England that happened in the past few years.
Nevertheless, I do not currently know who owned the collection, but I do know the collection was consigned from Michigan - the collector appears to have been a serious collector for a number of years.
In the end, I ended up buying a single lot of red earthenware that will enhance my collection of nineteenth-century red earthenware made in western New York and Ontario after 1840.
