There are characteristics about this lid that suggest it may have been made at the Safford Pottery in Monmouth, Maine, circa 1820-1860. However, the style of the handwritten '22' on the base does not match with other red earthenware objects, that I own, from the Safford Pottery that also have a handwritten '2' on the base.
Nevertheless, I wanted to quickly show this rare Maine-made red earthenware lid tonight - I can only imagine how large the jar must have appeared that originally went with this lid. I bet the jar was impressive!
