An Unusual Product Purchased Today that was Produced at the William Grueby Pottery in South Boston, Massachusetts

Typically, any type of product made at the William Grueby Pottery in South Boston, Massachusetts is rather desired today. The most accomplished products usually achieve prices well-into the thousands of dollars; although, prices can even soar to higher numbers depending on the object. It really all depends on the form, the stamp and the glaze color.

What I would like to do tonight - is show an object that I purchased at a Nan Gurley Antique Show in Portsmouth, New Hampshire today from Richard White, an antiques dealer based in Walpole, New Hampshire.  He said he couldn't remember exactly where he found this container - but, he felt it was probably found somewhere in New Hampshire.

I was surprised when I saw this object sitting on his table today - the base is stamped 'Grueby Pottery / Boston, USA,' which is a rare mark to find from the Grueby Pottery today. I have never seen this form before from this business. It appears to be a lidded utilitarian jar probably used for some type of storage. I assume this is probably a product that was made in the early years of the Grueby Pottery (established 1894) since it doesn't really correspond with the types of wares that were made in the twentieth-century. I believe this jar probably dates from the circa 1894-1900 period. It's a simple product when compared to the more elaborate types of wares made at the Grueby Pottery - none-the-less, it is also a rare product to find today.
