I will be speaking about this nineteenth century hound-handle red earthenware pitcher next month at Historic Trappe's Americana Symposium in southeastern Pennsylvania, March 13-15. The base of the pitcher is impressed, "Nathaniel Sellers / Upper Hanover, Pa."
My talk will focus on how I accidentally came across this object in the summer of 2023 in the kitchen of a penthouse located on the 18th floor overlooking Manhattan on Park Avenue. I will also discuss the history of the form, the life of Nathaniel Sellers (1808-1867) and the attention this object has received in the past few years, including an article published in the 2025 issue of Americana Insights.
This pitcher has also traveled a bit since 2023, from its presentation at the bi-annual ceramics conference at Historic Eastfield Village in New York, known as "Dish Camp," to its recent sale at Brunk Auctions in Asheville, North Carolina, where it is now displayed as part of Historic Trappe's exhibit, From Hubener to Medinger: Redware Potters of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
