A 19th Century Red Earthenware Ring Bottle or Flask Recently Found in the Buffalo, New York Area

This is a follow-up story to an article I posted a few days ago, titled, A Group of Potteries Operated by Migrant German Red Earthenware Potters in the Buffalo Area in Erie County, New York in the 1800s, where I cited in that story the relatively unknown production of three red earthenware businesses in Buffalo, possibly even more during this period. The names of these German red earthenware potters in Buffalo include the Betz family, the Koehler family, Meyer, Brandt and Mittler. There was also a potter named Schwartz who worked just to the east of Buffalo in Lancaster, New York.

Nonetheless, this nineteenth century red earthenware ring bottle or flask with a mottled green glaze was brought to my attention yesterday by a collector in Western New York. The bottle was recently found in the Buffalo area, whereas it is a style that was produced all over the world, although this specific type was popular in form with Germanic and Mediterranean cultures, perhaps supporting the idea that it may have been made by one of these potters working in the Buffalo area or elsewhere in Erie County. The mottled green glaze is also found with a number of potters working in the Western New York region; i.e. Heber Kimball, Nathaniel Rochester Pottery, etc.

It should also be noted that not only was Western New York known for its prolific red earthenware and stoneware businesses, but this is also where the Arts & Crafts Movement really began in America.
