This early nineteenth century stoneware jug from New York certainly caused some excitement on Facebook recently as it was posted in a private stoneware group, whereas it garnered quite a bit of attention and discussion. In fact, it was listed as an auction on eBay by a seller in Contookcook, New Hampshire, and described as, "Unmarked, ovoid form, sloped lip & handle, incised floral are all indicative of the work by George Lent of Lansingburgh / Troy New York."
Furthermore, this is a type of incised flower that Lent is known for based on marked examples that have appeared in the antiques marketplace in the past decade, such as a stoneware jug that sold at Crocker Farm in Sparks, Maryland in March of 2015 for $2,400, including the buyer's premium. Additionally, thanks to the research of New York antiques dealer Tim Bailey, a lot of new information about George Lent's career as a journeyman potter has been rediscovered. Nevertheless, this jug sold for $1,702.77 plus any additional eBay fees.
