The glaze on this circa 1890 red earthenware match safe is about as good as it gets with wares manufactured at the J. Eberly & Company Pottery in Strasburg, Virginia, about 1890 or so. Interestingly, Dr. Gene Comstock who authored the book The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley in 1992 sent me an actual price guide or trade card from this company a few years back, which indicates that match safes were sold for $0.60 per dozen back then.
Furthermore, I posted an article to this website in August of 2019 about the trade card, titled, Late-19th Century J. Eberly & Company Trade Card from Strasburg, Virginia.
Nevertheless, more recently, this object was published in 1929 in the book The Shenandoah Pottery, owned sometime between the 1920s-1940s by noted New York City antiques dealer George S.
