This is a real nice hand-thrown twentieth century yellow glazed earthenware vase that I found yesterday in a design/antique type shop in Lawrence, Massachusetts. The vase has an Art Deco look to it and I suspect the glaze was inspired from Chinese design. It stands eleven inches tall.
In fact, the use of a yellow glaze dates back centuries in China, eventually influencing some American potters at the World's Fair in Philadelphia in 1876, including the Robertson family and their production at the Chelsea Keramic Art Works in Chelsea, Massachusetts in the late 1870s and 1880s. Chinese porcelain adorned with yellow glazes also eventually went on display at a number of American art museums in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan.
Some of the other notable American art potters who produced yellow glazes, included William Grueby (1867-1925) in South Boston, Massachusetts, the Merrimac Pottery Company in Newburyport, Massachusetts and John Bennett (1840-1907) in New York City, among others.
Nonetheless, when I initially saw this vase, I felt it was made at one of the art pottery companies located in North Carolina, circa 1920s-1950s, although, I had also wondered if it may have been a really good example of art pottery made in Kentucky or Ohio around the same period. But after comparing production from both areas - I still feel North Carolina is a possibility for an origin. However, I would be happy to hear from anyone reading this post who can provide more information about the business that this may have vase originated at in the 1900s.
