Late-18th or 19th Century Green Glazed Red Earthenware Lid Found in Sag Harbor on Long Island

It has been about one year since I wrote about some slip-decorated Colonial red earthenware sherds attributed to the industry in Charlestown, Massachusetts, which were recovered by Chris Pickerell on the eastern end of Long Island in Southold, New York. "These slip-decorated pan remains were found among a large assemblage of ceramics, glass, pipes, bricks and other artifacts dating from the 1680s to the mid-eighteenth century. These artifacts originated from a home that previously occupied the property, with the first owners arriving as early as 1653."

Interestingly, Chris just discovered another example of early Massachusetts pottery on the eastern end of Long Island. This green glazed red eartheware lid was found in a collection in Sag Harbor, New York, and it was likely made in southeastern Massachusetts or Cape Cod. It was found by Chris when he was going through a friend's collection of artifacts that had been collected over the past 50 years, while working in construction on Long Island and inspecting crawl spaces and related contexts.
