Upcoming Published Feature Story in Antiques & Auctions News: The Albert Hastings Pitkin Collection

Another feature story I have written that will be published soon in Antiques & Auctions News, chronicles the life of Albert Hastings Pitkin (1852-1917), an influential nineteenth and early-twentieth century collector and museum specialist from Hartford, Connecticut. Throughout Pitkin's lifetime, he amassed a great collection of pottery, some of which was published, but all later donated to the Wadsworth Antheneum Museum of Art in Hartford.

I was lucky a few months ago to visit the museum's storage area, and see the entirety of the Pitkin Collection. Some of these objects were truly remarkable to see, and other than the published examples, the collection is not widely known today.

The museum also kindly granted permission for about a dozen objects to be published, which will be included in the story. I selected those pieces based on what I thought were the most significant, but also representing wares made all-over the east coast. Although, as I continued to research Pitkin, I also learned that his collection played a role at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan in the early-1900s.

Nevertheless, I am excited to see this story in publication, and it should be available in an upcoming issue of Antiques & Auctions News.
