New York State Stoneware on Display at the Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown, New York

After the Fenimore Art Museum, my nephew Jason and I traveled across the street to the Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown, New York, where we toured the museum, the farm and its historic houses, but we also anticipated studying the Frances and Douglas Faulkner stoneware collection.

According to the museum, "Frances and Douglas Faulkner collected New York State stoneware with the specific goal of obtaining of at least one potter's mark from each stoneware producing community in upstate New York. Unlike redware and yellowware, two other forms of utilitarian pottery, almost every stoneware shop stamped its name on at least some of its output.

The gift of the Faulkners collection to the Farmers' Museum provides the public with the most comprehensive collection of identifiable New York State stoneware. It gives a glimpse into an important nineteenth century industry that once flourished in the state.

The Faulkners began to collect stoneware in the mid-1950s, gradually focusing on New York examples. The 1970 publication of William C. Ketchum's Early Potters and Potteries of New York State (revised and republished in 1987) provided them with a guide for expanding their collection.

The collection was first exhibited in 1975 at the Erpf Catskill Cultural Center in Arkville, New York. Since then, portions of it have been seen at the American Folk Art Museum in New York City, the Scarsdale Historical Society, and the Zaddock Pratt Museum in Prattsville, New York."

My personal favorite aspect of the collection was a wonderful potter's wheel on display, which was reportedly "donated by a descendant of the Hilfinger stoneware manufactory located in Fort Edward, New York, which operated circa 1888-1942."
