A 19th Century Red Earthenware Animal Feeder Found Yesterday in Salem, Massachusetts

This is a nineteenth century red earthenware animal feeder that I discovered yesterday with my nephew, Jason inside a collectible/vintage/thrift-type group shop in Salem, Massachusetts. This is a style of production that can probably be found today attributed to potter's businesses in rural New England or even possibly to another region, such as Pennsylvania. But this is now the seventh animal feeder that I have discovered in the communities that surrounded Beverly, Massachusetts and Peabody, Massachusetts in the past five-years.

Five of the examples all match in form and interior glaze, where they were also removed by the potter from the potter's wheel with a wire, which can be seen from the marks that were left on the base.

All of the feeders have also been discovered at estate sales or from dealers, who had just cleaned out a local home. I was told yesterday that this feeder was also found in a local home, but they were not able to provide me with a specific location.

Nevertheless, this must have been a style of production that was manufactured in either Peabody or Beverly in the 1800s. I find this to be an exciting production-style that does not appear to have been published before about the industry in Essex County, Massachusetts.
