A 19th Century Stoneware Tree Trunk Planter Made at the Norton Pottery in Worcester, Massachusetts

This is a stoneware tree trunk planter that was made at the Norton Pottery in Worcester, Massachusetts in the late-nineteenth-century. This is a form that is often attributed to the Norton Pottery; however, I have found that this is an attribution that may be used too often since this form was made by many potter's businesses in the 1800's.

This type of form was made throughout the United States, in eastern Canada and in Europe. Tree trunk planters were also made out of stoneware, sewer tile and red earthenware. It depended on the location, the potter's business and the type of production, which a particular business was known for to determine what type of clay would have been used in production.

Nevertheless, I thought this would be a good object to show this morning in order to see how a tree trunk planter actually appeared from the Norton Pottery in Worcester, Massachusetts.
