A Small 19th Century Red Earthenware Jar Attributed to Vermont that is Currently Owned by The Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

This nineteenth-century Vermont-made red earthenware jar was also owned by Massachusetts author, Lura Woodside Watkins (see previous report from today for other Vermont-made objects from her collection) - and, it was also pictured in her book, 'Early New England Potters and Their Wares.' The jar is now owned by the National Museum of American History at The Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

Watkins doesn't provide an exact attribution for this jar; however, the rim, the overall form and the lack of a footed base do seem to relate to some of the objects that were made at the potteries in Middlebury, Vermont and New Haven, Vermont before 1850. Although, I can not be positive of either attribution even though the similarities are apparent.

What I would also like to mention: is the glaze on this object is similar to a red earthenware butter churn and a red earthenware jar that I own. I purchased both of these objects in New Hampshire, but I was told they were each originally found in Vermont. These objects were also recently pictured in a report that I published on this website on October 12th - if you have the time, it's worth a moment to go back and look at those two objects and compare their glazes to the glaze seen on this jar.
